Sports Medicine

Bishop McDevitt High School is proud to announce that starting with the 2013-2014 school year we will be using ImPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) to help with concussion recognition and management. This program will assist our team physicians/athletic trainer in evaluating and treating head injuries (e.g., concussion). ImPACT is a computerized exam utilized in many professional, collegiate, and high school sports programs across the country to successfully diagnose and manage concussions. If an athlete is believed to have suffered a head injury during competition, ImPACT is used to help determine the severity of head injury and when the injury has fully healed.

All athletes are required to take the computerized exam before beginning sport practice or competition. This non-invasive test is set up in “video-game” type format and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. It is simple, and actually many athletes enjoy the challenge of taking the test. Essentially, the ImPACT test is a preseason physical of the brain. It tracks information such as memory, reaction time, speed, and concentration. It, however, is not an IQ test.

New PA Heat Laws

Every high school football program in Pennsylvania must go through a three-day heat acclimatization process this fall before regular practice can begin. The PIAA Board of Directors, by a 22-8 vote, approved a heat acclimatization program for football only starting with the 2013 season.

Practice or competition in hot and/or humid environmental conditions poses special problems for student-athletes. Heat illness is a primary concern in these conditions. Although deaths from heat illness are rare, constant surveillance and education are necessary to prevent heat-related problems.

Acclimatization Period: The first three days of football practice commencing on the first starting day. Helmets and shoulder pads with shorts the first 2 days and full gear on third day with contact permitted on third day.

  • These practices are limited to 5 hours of practice daily. Sessions may be no longer than 3 hours in length and teams must have 2 hours of rest between sessions.

  • These days are to be three consecutive days and are not to be earlier than Wednesday, August 7th. Helmets and shoulder pads with shorts the first 2 days and full gear on third day.

If there are more than  48 hours between the conclusion of the heat acclimatization program and first day of practice, the program will not have its intended affect medically.
