Swimming & Diving - Coed

Kurt Sprowls, Head Swimming & Diving Coach

Kurt began coaching the girls and boys teams at Bishop McDevitt in the fall of 2012.  The Crusaders boys claimed the PIAA Team Championship title in 2021 and a PIAA Team Runner-up finish in 2023.  The Bishop McDevitt boys earned seven straight PIAA District 3 Team Championship titles (2018-2024).  The girls team completed a perfect season and claimed their first Mid Penn Keystone Division title in 2024.  The boys teams have claimed five Keystone Division titles since Sprowls began coaching for the Crusaders.  Coach Sprowls was named PA Boys AA Coach of the Year by the Pennsylvania High School Swimming Coaches Association (PHSSCA) in 2021 and named PennLive's boys Swimming & Diving  COY in 2024.

Both the girls and boys teams have established a reputation for championship level swimming, consistently earning spots on the Mid Penn, District and PIAA Championship medal podiums.  Over 90% of the program’s “All-Time Top 10” performances have been achieved since Kurt began in 2012.  21 team records are owned by swimmers and divers competing for McDevitt since 2012.  Six NISCA "All America" performances have been achieved by Bishop McDevitt boys.

Kurt began swimming competitively at age six for the Harrisburg Y and competed for the Navy Swim Club and Mechanicsburg Aquatic Club through his age group and high school years.  Kurt graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1992 where he was a eight-time state finalist in swimming, cross country, and track & field.  Several of his XC course, pool, and track records remain to this day, including a District 3 cross country course record which was retired when the championship meet moved from Milton Hershey's main campus.

His first swim coaching experience occurred in 1993 as an assistant for the Latshmere Swim Club age group summer program.  Kurt led Latshmere’s  8 & under through 12 & under age groups for nine seasons before assuming the head coaching duties at Latshmere.  He continued in this role for another 15 seasons while also establishing a new year round program (Collegiate Aquatics) and beginning to coach for Bishop McDevitt High School.   Kurt also was a member of the coaching staff at the Camp Curtin Y Aquatic Club for five years during the late 90s and early 00s before the creation of Collegiate Aquatics, founded in 2006.   In total, the teams achieved 11 league team division titles and his athletes established over 250 team records.  His age group athletes achieved numerous accolades at the local, regional and USA Swimming zone level, including dozens of league championship meet records, MA “high point” athlete, and Northeast  Zone records.

Kurt earned undergraduate and graduate degrees (economics,  psychology, entrepreneurial management, and public policy) from the University of Pennsylvania.  He competed as a Varsity cross country and track athlete during his undergraduate years and graduate assistant during his graduate work.  He also maintains memberships in the PHSSCA, USA Swimming, and the American Swim Coaches Association.
