Cross Country and Track & Field - Coed

Micheal Carbon, Head Cross Country Coach

Micheal began his long-distance running career in High School. As a member of Mohawk Area High School Cross Country team, Micheal qualified for the State Finals his senior year where he finished 27 th  at the state meet. .

Micheal continued his running career in college, attending West Virginia University, where he excelled in Cross- Country and Track and Field.

Micheal first entered coaching at the middle school level in 2018.  That year he became head coach of the Seven Sorrow track and field team. In 2019, under Coach Carbon’s direction, Seven Sorrows Varsity Boys and Girls both won the CYO Keystone Championships and the boys finished second at the CYO All League Meet.

When Covid hit, Micheal saw the number of track participants dwindle, like many other schools. Rather than closing the program, he reached out pro-actively to St. Joan of Arc and got approval from the CYO board of directors to merge the two small schools. Micheal assisted a couple of years to ensure the program took off.

It was about this time that Dan McGinnis, long-time cross-country and track and field coach, approached Micheal about assisting with the high school track and field program. Dan asked if Micheal would assist in coaching the long-distance runners. Micheal worked closely with Matt Pugliese to train and motivate the high school distance runners for two years.

The following year, McGinnis asked Micheal to initiate a winter running program for the school’s distance runners. With the help of Assistant Coach Kelly Fox, the winter running program began and is currently still in place. Last winter Coach Carbon and Fox took athletes to three indoor meets, providing the opportunity for McDevitt distance runners to compete against some of the best talent in Pennsylvania.

In the spring of 2025, McGinnis approached Coach Carbon again, asking him to be head coach of the long-distance runners for track and field. And when the season ended, Coach McGinnis, know affectionately as “DMAC,” approached Coach Carbon to take over the cross-country program. Coach McGinnis determined it was time to pass the baton after his 26 years of successful coaching at McDevitt.
