“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)
Dear Crusader Family,
As I reflect on what has been the most unusual end to a school year in my career, I want to extend a heartfelt congratulation to our entire school community for what we have accomplished together. The way you all - students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and friends, have stepped up to help navigate the challenges that were presented to us in the last three months has been truly remarkable. Challenging situations require us to adapt quickly and I am proud that we did this together.
To our students, I commend you on your accomplishments this year and am proud of your adaptability. I am sorry that this year ended in this fashion and that many of you did not get to complete or compete in the events, performances, and activities that you have dedicated so much of your time and energy to. However, having spoken to many of you across all grade levels during these quarantined months I was able to hear, understand and see the great work you have shown in your studies among a very trying and unmotivating time. To our seniors, I feel for you in what you have endured during your last three months at McDevitt. Your effort to continue to the finish line assures me you will persevere, continue to grow and be quite successful in your next chapter. Whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, this was hard on all of you but with true McDevitt pride you showed resilience and rose to the occasion and finished the year strong. Congratulations!
To our teachers, thank you for a fantastic job overcoming a new way of teaching and going above and beyond the normal methods to continue educating our students. You adapted with flexibility, creativity and most certainly, compassion. You are not just a teacher but a mentor and live our mission every day to graduate well-rounded, faith-filled young men and women.
To our office and facility staff, I appreciate you for the continual support of our school and internal teams. Each one of you has gone above and beyond in your role to ensure that our school was prepared and ready for whatever came our way. You supported the cleaning and sanitizing of the facility to locker clean-out, supporting daily operational needs and more.
To our parents, thank you for your patience and understanding during these very stressful times. This challenge has presented my fellow administrators and I an opportunity to engage with many of you and connect in meaningful ways. Thank you for choosing a Bishop McDevitt education for your child.
To our alumni, donors, and friends, thank you for your unending support during the 2019-2020 school year. Your leadership, encouragement and financial support is a true testament of Crusader pride.
I wish each of you a wonderful summer break and when permitted, please take the time to refresh, relax and breath fresh air. Pick up a book, go on an adventure and connect with friends and family. Dr. Seuss says, “you have brains in your head and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose”. Move around, make good decisions and continue to explore educationally, socially and spiritually this summer.
It was a year ago that I arrived on Bishop McDevitt’s beautiful campus to interview for my position. One of the first things that was shared with me is how McDevitt prides itself on being a family. Throughout the year, I have witnessed what that means in more ways than one and am equally as proud to be a member of this family. I stand here committed to you as our school’s president, and a parent, to serve this community with our legacy of faith, family and excellence.
Please, join us for our end of the year Mass on Tuesday, May 26th at 11:00 a.m. on our school’s Facebook page. Fr. Josh Weaver will be celebrating on Facebook Live. Have a wonderful, safe summer and I look forward to seeing everyone back in the fall. Be well.
