Saint Jeanne is a great example of someone who is poor in spiri
t.
To begin with, she was born on December 27, 1556 at Bourdeaux, France.
She married Gaston de Montferrant, who was the Baron of Landiras, in 1572 at the
age of 16. During her marriage, she
brought seven children into the world. Unfortunately,
only five lived to experience adulthood and two of them entered religious life.
She was widowed at the age of 41, she managed the affairs of the castle
and estate on her own. When she
believed that her contributions to the world were finished, she entered a
Cistercian house at Toulouse at the age of 46.
She became seriously ill and requested to die at the monastery, but her
superiors did not allow it. On the
last night at the monastery, a vision of Mary came to her who presented an image
of Jeanne helping lost children. She
lived out her vision by returning to her estate and slowly starting to work with
local priests and women which led to the foundation of the Sisters of the
Company of Mary. It was
approved by Pope Paul V on April 7th 1607.
Later on, Jeanne was elected superior in 1610.
