Saint Bernadette was born in Lourdes, France on Monday January 7, 1844.  She was the first child of Francois and Louise and her family was poor and she was born with bad health.  One day, a very beautiful lady appeared to her and her sister as they were gathering firewood.  The lady smiled and made the sign of the cross.  Bernadette was confused because she did not understand who the lady was.  Finally, the lady revealed that she was the Immaculate Conception, the Mother of God.  The lady told Bernadette that she should pray for sinners, do penance and have a chapel built there in her honor.  Bernadette listened to the lady and did as she asked.  Many people did not believe Bernadette, and she was made fun of, accused of lying, and asked to stop this foolishness.  Despite everything, Bernadette remained steadfast in her faith and in Mary.  She continued praying and doing as she was asked.  One day, the lady asked Bernadette to dig into the mud.  As Bernadette was digging, a spring of water began to flow in that same spot.  The water from that spring caused many miracles to occur, and still cause them to happen today.  Bernadette was a very humble person who kept her faith through everything.  She eventually became a nun and her feast day is April 16.

Saint Bernadette lived out this beatitude by being willing to suffer for her faith, not giving in to others wrongdoing, and persistently listening to Mary through everything.  She choose to live this way because she understood that Mary was the Mother of God, the rightful way, and was loving dedicated to God.
