THE PHILOSOPHY
The Bishop Lawrence F. Schott Chapter of the National Honor Society is comprised of a group of Bishop McDevitt High School students who accept the chapter's philosophy as herein outlined.
Our aim is to honor those students who have achieved an advanced level of scholastic standing, have manifested strong, intelligent leadership both in and out of school, have given extra-ordinary service, whose character may be said to be "above reproach". Our members do not claim to be perfect, but they do profess sincerity of life.
Because our school has other "service clubs" which take care of the needs of our student body and surrounding community, our organization does not profess to do many things as an organized group. Rather, we expect our members to become recognized leaders in and supporters of those other activity groups. Our members are expected to become "the leaven" which will raise the quality of each group of which they become a member
Accepting the teaching of Christ as found in Luke 12:48, "When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him; when a man has had a great deal given to him in trust, even more will be expected of him", our members strive to develop their own potential by using the talents given them by their Creator in such a way as to benefit their fellowman and increase their own merit before God.
The national motto of the NHS --NOBLESSE OBLIGE ("high position justifies great expectations") follows through with this same principle. Our NHS Chapter does have one specialized activity which is very much in keeping with the goals of the society: our tutoring program provides an opportunity to the NHS member to share the gifts of his mind with his fellow students.
Thus, we can state that membership in the society is based not merely on scholastic attainment, but on a way of life --the Christian way of life which teaches that "whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto Me. "
At the periodic meetings of the society, our members should share with their fellow members the experiences they have had in the various activities, in an effort to encourage change or sustain, and in general to work for the betterment of self, fellow students, the school and society. There should be a continuous self-evaluation of the qualities which have merited their election as NHS members, and an acceptance of the fact that default of maintaining their high level of achievement must necessarily lead to dismissal from the society which has hitherto singled them out for special recognition.
The philosophy as here-in outlined parallels the philosophy of Bishop McDevitt High School which is a "dynamic, educational community, unique in its composition, and unique in its response to Christ".
