Survey of Music (A)
Quarter Course required of freshmen. The course focuses on developing an aesthetic sensitivity to music.
Band (A)
A group oriented course emphasizing marching and playing skills in the fall of the year, and symphonic literature the remainder of the year. Course work begins over the summer, and includes some required out-of-school rehearsals and performances.
Chorus (A)
The SATB chorus is open to any students who love to sing. This is the main vocal performing group at McDevitt and is active throughout the entire school year. The students will learn the proper breathing and singing technique through study and performance of a wide variety of music styles.
Concert Choir (H)
The Concert Choir is an audition only SATB vocal ensemble whose repertoire is taken from college and professional level vocal arrangements. Students may sign up only with the express written permission of the director.
Introduction to Music Theory I (A)
Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory through the study of all major and minor scales, chords, chordal inversions, sight singing, and melodic/rhythmic dictation.
Music Theory II (A)
Students with the intention of pursuing a career in music are strongly encouraged to take Music Theory II. College level four-part writing, advanced chord study, sight singing, melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation are taught in addition to an understanding of musical terminology and music history as it relates to music theory.
Music Theory III (A)
The study of musical form and analysis, conducting, sight singing (advanced intervals), and advanced ear training are taught and reinforced through music composition.
Introduction to Piano/Keyboard (A)
Open to students with no prior piano training to learn the proper techniques of playing the piano and music reading/theory. At the end of the course, the student will be able to play songs requiring the independent use of both hands and a good level of music-reading ability.
