Clothing/Textiles
This beginning clothing course is offered to sophomore, junior and senior students. It includes the construction of simple pillows, pajama pants, duffle bags or pocketbooks, skirts, or ties. Students learn to identify fabrics, operate a sewing machine, how to read a pattern, how to hem and mend clothing. Students also learn stamped cross-stitch and crochet. Students are required to purchase their own materials during the school year. A lab fee of $25 is due before back-to-school night. This class fosters patience, time management, and self-esteem.
Home Economics service projects include cross-stitch baby bibs, newborn caps and crocheted blankets for distribution to the Pro-Life Club. This is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. A field trip to Handcock Fabric Store and to JoAnn Fabric Store is taken during the first marking period.
Advanced Clothing
This second level sewing course is open to students who have completed the beginning clothing course. The students begin with a simple review project. Students then must construct a minimum of four advanced projects, which they purchase the materials for. They may also choose to make a prom dress. A lab fee due before back to school night.
Foods/Nutrition
This course is offered to juniors and seniors. Basic techniques of safety, sanitation, and food preparation are applied as the student’s plans and executes the preparation of meals of increasing difficulty. Included in the theory lessons are nutrition, table etiquette, recipe skills, measuring, shopping skills, laundry, and meal planning. Several popular books are included in the lessons, such as “What Would Jesus Eat” and “Catholic Traditions in Cooking”. A class trip to Roots Farmers Market is taken in the fall. An outdoor picnic in the Spring. Students perform live or video taped cooking demonstrations as their final project. “Snack Day” has become a class tradition each Thursday. Live cooking demonstrations are done throughout the year by alumni chefs. There is a lab fee due before back-to-school night.
